Yesterday’s arrival of Virgin Australia’s new ATR-72 Turbo Prop aircraft on our tarmac marked a special day for our region. Several of Virgin’s senior executives flew into Bundy to join many local business operators at a celebratory lunch held at The Brothers Sports Club.
An unexpected and very special guest was Her Excellency, Penelope Wensley AC, Governor of Queensland accompanied by her husband Mr. Stuart McCosker. Both are regular visitors to our region and the Governor’s staunch support following the January disasters was exceptional and very much appreciated.
The Mayor’s speech highlighted the importance of competition within the airline market and the widespread benefits that resulted for the wider community. He also acknowledged the hugh amount of work that was undertaken over many years to attract a second carrier and paid tribute to former and current Councillors and staff for that work and for committing to the upgrade the airport precinct which was paramount to this succcessful outcome. It was also appropriate and pleasing to hear him acknowledge the considerable contribution to the process made by his predecessor Lorraine Pyefinch who was also in attendance at the luncheon.
Scheduled passenger services begin on 4th May with one daily return flight to Brisbane seven days a week departing as follows : BNE/BBG – 12.40pm : BBG/BNE – 2.10pm. At the moment there are limited seats available from $69.00 one-way.
Virgin will hold a Community Day at the airport on Saturday 27th April between 10.30am & 2.30pm with some family activities (especially for the kids) and an opportunity to inspect the ATR-72.
All in all, great news and a very positive step forward for our region!
