SHOULD BARGARA HAVE ITS OWN SPORTING COMPLEX?

I’ve been speaking with the Chris Norris, Principal of the Bargara State School regarding an idea to upgrade their sports oval into a dedicated Sporting Complex for various codes.

thThe local population has grown to the stage where there’s definitely a need for much improved sporting facilities for our youth and the existing sports oval behind the school presents an ideal opportunity for expansion and upgrades.

The use of the existing land & infrastructure would provide significant savings over a greenfield site and I understand that there are a number of potential grant programs available for these types of projects.

From my perspective the location couldn’t be better, especially given the fact that the State Government plans to establish a High School nearby at some time in the future. The main concern (apart from funding) would appear to be the availability of sufficient car parking however I’m sure that this could be addressed in a master plan.

My understanding is that the Education Department are interested in the proposal and that some very preliminary discussions have taken place with Council officers however it hasn’t been presented to Council yet and I need to stress that nothing formal has progressed at this point in time. It’s just an idea that’s being kicked around.

The purpose of this article is to simply get a feel for the community’s thoughts on the idea. Obviously, if it was to progress any further a full community consultation process would need to be undertaken but I think that an early sign of support would bolster any chance of success.
