‘SHARED ZONES’ TO BE CLARIFIED

Over the last few weeks it’s become apparent that many people, and especially visitors, don’t know what a ‘Shared Zone’ is and whether pedestrians or motorists have ‘right of way’.

On Saturday, Monday & Tuesday I spoke with pedestrians at the intersection of Bauer Street & The Esplanade at Bargara and asked if they understood what a ‘Shared Zone’ entailed and very few did. These comments mirror those that were recently reported in a News-Mail article and an accompanying editorial.

When you think about it, if you’re from another State or Country the term ‘Shared Zone’ really doesn’t describe what is expected of either pedestrians or motorists and so I think that this feedback is both warranted and constructive.

Accordingly, I’ve asked that all signs depicting a shared zone also be accompanied with the words ‘Give Way To Pedestrians’ which should remove any ambiguity. The additional signs are being ordered and will be installed as soon as possible.

Many thanks to those who provided the feedback.
