Having received several requests for improved picnic infrastructure at the northern end of Nielson Park, I’m pleased to advise that preliminary works are about to begin.
A number of additional aluminium bench/table ensembles and a new BBQ will be located under those magnificent trees between the road and the old skating rink which will take advantage of the all-day shade that they provide. Due to the extent of that shade, there will be a reduced need for bulky shelter sheds and I don’t think that a few falling leaves are going to upset anyone!
All of these sites will be close to existing potable water outlets.
Council officers have also proposed that the existing ‘challenging’ play equipment which is designed for the older kids, should be located closer to the rear of the amenities building which will free up more open space to the south.
The controversial and broken spinning thingy will also be replaced with a more suitable device.
I’ve also asked staff to explore the possibility of installing a lockable 240V / 3 Phase power outlet close to the intersection of the foreshore pathway and the main access pathway (close to the Surf Club) which would help organisers who use this area for public events.
Nielson’s is a beautiful area and I’m hoping that these proposed upgrades will better cater for locals and visitors alike.
