Last month Council fenced off a section of Nielson Park following the discovery of particles of asbestos on the surface which is believed to be the remnants of the old kiosk which was demolished on-site some 30 years ago.
The contaminated area has now been cleared with sections being dug out to a depth of about 300mm. Some 190 cubic metres of replacement soil and sand is being imported to repatriate the area with the work expected to be completed by this weekend. All being well, new turf will be laid early next week but sections may still be fenced off whilst it’s watered and allowed to take root.
Council hopes to open the new section of play area within the next few days so that the newly installed play devices can be used.
Council’s Parks & Garden crew have responded quickly to the incident and the repatriation works and I’d like to congratulate them for their quick action in having the park ready for the upcoming holiday season.
Apologies also for any convenience caused whist this section of the park has been closed to the public.
