Queensland’s Attorney-General, The Hon Jarrod Bleijie MP has written to all of the State’s 91,000 Justices of the Peace (JPs) and Commissioners of Declarations (C.decs) to advise of impending changes to their roles and asking them to confirm their contact details as a matter of urgency.
As part of the changes, Mr. Bleijie has approved:
- a trial to to enable JPs to hear matters of up to $5,000 to assist the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal QCAT);
- the re-establishment of the JP Advisory Council;
- expansion of the JPs in the Community Program;
- introduction of a formal mentoring program;
- introduction of compulsory training prior to appointment for all categories;
- removing the JP(C.dec) category; and
- a review of the Code of Conduct.

JPs or Cdecs who can no longer perform their duties or who wish to resign their appointment should also advise the department as soon as possible.
