NEW BUS SET-DOWN FACILITY INSTALLED ON WSD

The new passenger set-down area on the eastern side of Woongarra Scenic Drive has now been installed.

Located just south of the entrance to Carlyle Gardens Retirement Village, the facility was requested by residents who held concerns for mobility-impaired bus passengers who were having difficulty alighting from buses and safely crossing the busy roadway.

Engineers had originally proposed to install the facility outside residential homes further to the north between the village entrance and Watson’s Road. To my mind, this had the potential to create a nuisance for local residents as well as placing it in an area where motorist’s attention is often preoccupied with the approaching Watson’s Road intersection.

By contrast, the chosen site abuts open parkland and is on the apex of a curve in the road which provides an excellent view of approaching traffic from both the north and the south. It is also close to an existing pedestrian crossing point which is in close proximity to the local shops and the village entrance and is joined to it by a connecting footpath.

Thanks to the residents who pursued this issue together with the Manager of Carlyle Gardens and Council engineers who worked collaboratively to achieve a sensible outcome.
