I recently received an inquiry from a resident regarding the absence of directional signage to the airport which I consider to be quite a valid point.
I’ve since raised the matter with Council officers who will now install the blue & white symbolic aircraft signs at appropriate locations and, where possible, on existing sign poles to save costs.
I’m anticipating some initial criticism over the routes which will be promoted for those motorists heading to the airport from locations along the coast between the Burnett & Elliott Rivers as they will identify the Ring Road and Isis Highway as the most reliable arterial roads.
Local residents will appreciate that shorter routes exist (ie via Maynard Road, Walker Street, Bourbong/Takalvan Streets, etc) however Council is aware that effective signage should cater for the needs of motorists who are not familiar with the down-side of some of the short-cuts.
The aim is to promote the most reliable route for those needing to arrive in time for their allocated check-ins or pick-ups. To this end, we’ve avoided routes that could create unexpected delays such as:
-
multiple streets turns,
-
built up areas,
-
railway crossings,
-
school zones,
-
traffic lights,
-
roadworks,
-
etc
and have focused on the most simple, direct and reliable routes.
By doing so, I believe that visitors will have a better assurance of arriving on time whilst the ‘in-the-know’ locals will continute to use their preferred short-cuts.
