Media Release – SMOKE TESTING AND INSPECTION PROGRAM FOR BARGARA

Council requests community support and co-operation when it conducts a smoke testing and inspection program of the residential sewerage systems in the Bargara area.

Defective plumbing and improper connections to the sewerage network allows rainwater to infiltrate Council’s sewer mains and overload the sewer system in wet weather conditions resulting in overflows and odour problems.

The aim of this program is to identify such defects in the sanitary house drainage and once identified, residents will be requested to rectify those defects by employing a suitable licensed plumber or drainer.

As part of this work Council Staff will need to access private properties in the Bargara area to inspect the external house drainage.

All Council staff involved with the inspection program will carry identification cards to be produced upon request.

The program is expected to start on March 11 and be completed by September 30, 2014. Notice will be given to individual premises prior to commencement of inspection works.

The testing involves injecting a harmless smoke-like substance into Council sewers and the sanitary house drainage pipework.

As a result of the testing, smoke like vapour may be seen coming from manhole covers, storm drains, roof vents, around building foundations or from the ground.
