Media Release – RESIDENTS URGED AGAINST COMPLACENCY

With sunny, blue skies gracing the Bundaberg region, local Mayor Mal Forman is urging residents not to be complacent and continue to adhere to latest advice via the Bureau of Meteorology and www.qldalert.com

Following a joint meeting of the Local Disaster Management Group and the District Disaster Management Group to discuss the latest information from the Bureau of Meteorology, a press conference was held at the Bundaberg Regional Council at lunchtime to reinforce the message that residents should remain vigilant and be prepared for severe weather later today.

“We are expecting severe winds if Tropical Cyclone Marcia approaches the Bundaberg region as a category 2 or category 1 system later today,” Mayor Forman said.

“We are expecting that an event like this could bring rainfall in the vicinity of 100 to 200mm.”

“We are reinforcing the message that residents should take shelter in place and ensure the safety of their families and pets as we brace for strong winds and heavy rain later today

“We are also reinforcing that residents should be tuning in to TV and radio reports and checking the Bureau of Meteorology site and qldalert.com for storm surge information

“It is important that residents refer to localised information on these sites and listen to local media reports for the most accurate updates and warnings.”

Residents are reminded to tune in to warnings on TV, radio and at www.qldalert.com

For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500. The 24 hour disaster coordination centre can be contacted on 1300 883 699. In life-threatening situations call 000.
