Residents of the Bundaberg region are being reminded to observe local government laws regarding dogs in public places after receiving an influx of complaints from locals about dogs in prohibited places.
Portfolio Spokesperson for Health and Regulatory Services, Cr Wayne Honor says that while Council would rather not fine pet owners who allow their dogs in prohibited areas, the Council does have a responsibility to enforce local laws.
“People should be aware that there are fines in place for dog owners ignoring the laws. For example, failure to effectively control an animal by a leash in a public place and failure to prevent an animal from entering a public place where animals are prohibited can attract fines of $227,” Cr Honor said.
“Another common occurrence is failure to remove and dispose of dog faeces from a public place. This also carries a fine of $227.”
Divisional representative for the Bargara area, Cr Greg Barnes says he has received a number of complaints from residents about dog owners taking their pets into designated bathing reserves.
“I think it’s timely to remind people that Kelly’s Beach and Neilsen’s Beach are prohibited to dogs. These are no-go areas – regardless of whether your dog is on a lead or not,” Cr Barnes said.
“If people are unsure of where to take their dogs, they may want to take a look at the designated off-leash area at Nielsen Park, which is now defined by bollards with signage.”
