Nominating a champion from our region as a recipient of an Australia Day Spirit Award should be a pleasure and certainly not a task according to Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor Mal Forman.
“The advertising material promoting the Australia Day Awards is right on the mark when it says that right across our region we have ordinary people doing extraordinary things.”
Cr Forman was supported in his remarks by the 2015 Australia Day Green Spirit Award winner Ray Johnson of Gin Gin.
Mr Johnson was recognised for his extended association with Gin Gin Landcare and his ongoing involvement in the group’s native plant nursery which has supplied thousands of trees for revegetation projects.
He is very proud of the award but sees it more as recognition for the work Landcare is undertaking across the region.
“I was happy to accept this award on behalf of a whole host of people who give of their time and talents to ensure we continue to provide a service that has such a positive impact on the environment.”
“I think it also gives you a great feeling to know that the work you do is appreciated. Most people who work in volunteer organisations do not do it for reward or recognition but it is a bonus when someone takes the time to submit a nomination.”
Mr Johnson said the added advantage in nominating people for the Australia Day awards was the exposure and publicity various organisations receive.
“A nomination not only rewards the nominee it also adds public profile to the organisation the nominee represents.”
Mr Johnson said that even if a nomination was unsuccessful it was the simple act of nominating a person that was a show of respect for what the individual has contributed.
Cr Forman urged local groups and organisations to look within their own ranks and to identify potential recipients.
Nominations for the 2016 Bundaberg Regional Council Australia Day Spirit Awards can be made online at www.bundaberg.qld.gov.au before the closing date of November 13.
