An important stage of a coastal road linking communities from Burnett Heads to Elliott Heads is set to commence this month with construction of a road which will eventually connect to Hughes Rd, Bargara.
Council’s Roads and Drainage portfolio spokesperson Cr Tony Ricciardi said this stage of the long-term strategy would see Hughes Rd extended from the newly constructed roundabout on Windermere and Rifle Range Roads through to the Wearing Road extension which is currently under construction.
“Council has engaged local contractor Berajondo Earthmoving to undertake this construction project worth about $1.2 million,” Cr Ricciardi said.
“The contractor is anticipating to start work early this month and is expecting the project will be completed in late May, weather permitting.
“It is pleasing to see Council’s long-term strategy for the connectivity of coastal areas between Burnett Heads and Elliott Heads progressing with this significant construction project.”
Cr Ricciardi said the project was made possible through the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery program and Queensland Government Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme funding.
Divisional representative Cr Greg Barnes also welcomed the news that the next stage of the Hughes Road Extension was set to get underway.
“This represents the first incursion into the unformed section of the project across the missing link of vacant land,” Cr Barnes said.
“The overall project will not only provide further connectivity between coastal communities and facilities but will also see a considerable reduction in traffic movements along foreshore roadways.
“It will also stimulate further development in the area, enhanced by Council’s commitment to provide sewerage along a similar route.”
Cr Ricciardi thanked residents and motorists in advance for their patience as these works were carried out.
