Domestic and family violence continues to be a significant public health issue in Queensland with local communities being urged to play a role in exposing any incidence of this harrowing social disease.
The Childers Neighbourhood Centre is playing its part in raising community awareness of the steps that can be taken to bring domestic, family and elder violence out of the shadows and into the glare of public exposure.
Cr Judy Peters, Bundaberg Regional Council’s Community Services portfolio spokesperson said a community barbecue lunch will be held at Millennium Park in Childers on Friday, May 9 from 11am to promote the “Make the Call” campaign.
“It is a staggering statistic that around 44% of all homicides that occurred in Queensland between 2006 and 2012 were linked to domestic and family violence with women in particular the victims at a rate of around four times that of men.”
“This awareness event will highlight the steps that can be taken to address known or suspected incidents of violence or threatening behavior.”
Cr Peters said the Make the Call campaign provided DVConnect numbers for women and men.
“If anyone has knowledge of a situation where harm is being threatened then the best advice is to dial 000 and speak with Police.”
The Make the Call campaign is a part of Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month during May. Numbers to call include:
