Bundaberg Regional Council is trialling a new herbicide spray as it seeks to control the recurring weed infestation at Bargara Lakes.
Council’s Health and Regulatory Services portfolio spokesperson Cr Wayne Honor said Council expects that the spraying program will prove to be a cost-effective solution.
“While there is no guarantee that this herbicide will be effective, as it is just a trial at this stage, we are hopeful that it will alleviate the aquatic weed situation at Bargara Lakes which is causing residents some distress,” Cr Honor said.
Divisional representative Cr Greg Barnes said he urged residents to be patient and understanding as Council seeks solutions to this long-standing issue.
“This particular herbicide is specifically designed to control aquatic weeds, and is safer to use around fish, other freshwater and marine wildlife.”
“I encourage residents to focus on the end result which will hopefully be the return of a picturesque and healthy lake,” Cr Barnes said.
Responsibility for the lake, which was designed by the developer as a retention basin, was given to the Burnett Shire Council and was inherited by Bundaberg Regional Council in the amalgamation.
Cr Honor said while Council strived to do its best to control natural occurrences in the lake, he urged the community to partner with Council to address reports of littering in the area.
