“If you build it, they will come,” Field of Dreams keep spirits up for Sports Community devastated by recent Bundaberg floods.

The Bundaberg sports community looked on in horrible déjà vu as their clubs were inundated during the recent flooding, some only months after reopening post the 2010/11 floods.

An unlikely collaboration between an Australian Olympic rower, a sports commentator and sports marketing company are doing amazing fundraising to get Bundaberg Sporting clubs on the way to recovery.

Emma McCarthy, Australian Olympic Rower, grew up in Bundaberg and her parents power tool store was devastated by the recent floods, “ I was heart broken when I went to help Mum and Dad, to see destruction of the local sporting clubs, some only months are reopening after the floods in 2010/11. I knew I had to do something to help.”

Using Twitter to find like-minded people in the community, Emma connected with local Bundaberg Sports Commentator, Mike Drewett, who was already formulating a fundraising idea for the local sporting clubs. Emma volunteered to be involved.

Emma who works for Legado, marketing experts who focus on building sports professionals’ profiles online, asked what they could do to get involved. The facts are heartbreaking.

  • All the major sporting codes have been seriously effected (Cricket, Rowing, Hockey, Football, Rugby, and Netball).
  • The clubs had already fundraised over a million dollars to rebuild surfaces, replace equipment and facilities post 2010/11 floods.
  • QLD Sports Minister estimates damage in the tens of millions.
  • Only $1m for all Queensland sporting clubs affected by the floods have been allocated by the Government in the form of grants.

Preetesh Morar, Director of Legado, “We really wanted to do something to help those affected by the recent flooding. We were really excited when Emma approached us to get involved. At Legado, we are passionate about leaving a legacy and really believe in the importance of giving back to our community. “

Legado is hosting a sports profiling education seminar and fundraising event at the Pullman Hotel on Ann St in Brisbane City on Friday 22 February from 9am-5pm. 80% of the ticket sales will be donated directly to the Bundaberg Sports Flood Appeal.

Mike is hosting a fundraising evening at the Coral Cove Resort in Bundaberg on Saturday 30 March where donated sports memorabilia will be auctioned off to raise money for the sporting clubs.
