Please note that the following Media Release is especially important if you own a dog(s) near the Barolin Nature Reserve (former Pasturage Reserve) and allow them to wander off-leash. Whilst having a dog off-leash in this area is an offence, the most important consideration is the safety of your pet.

In order to protect turtle nests along the region’s coastline Council will be undertaking a fox control program in the Barolin Nature Reserve.
Environment and Natural Resources portfolio spokesperson Cr Danny Rowleson said Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service had requested Council undertake the program.
“The control program will reduce the threat of foxes destroying endangered Loggerhead Turtle eggs and hatchlings at the Mon Repos Conservation Park,” Cr Rowleson said.
“It is vitally important that we help to protect and preserve this endangered species.”
He said the reserve would be closed from Monday, February 17 until Friday, February 21 while fox control baits were put in place.
“The baits will be placed by Council’s Land Protection Officer who is licensed to use ‘1080’ poison.
“Throughout the week Council staff will also monitor the baits.”
Although domestic dogs are not permitted in Barolin Nature Reserve, Cr Rowleson said to avoid the risk of an unrestrained pet animal ingesting the baits, Council had written to all nearby residents to advise them of the program.
During the closure period, entry gates near Bargara State School, Davidson St and the Turtle Trail will be locked and signage will be erected.
