MEDIA RELEASE – FLOURIDE DECISION WELCOMED

Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor, Cr. Mal Forman said he was “over the moon” with the news the State Government had resolved to exempt the Bundaberg Region from compulsory fluoridation of its water supply.

“It’s fantastic to see the effort put in by local Member Steve Bennett and Council has provided such a positive result.”

Cr. Forman said it had been a long and difficult road to today’s announcement.

“I must pay credit to Council’s Water and Wastewater portfolio spokesman, Cr. Alan Bush who never gave up the fight to have the State Government’s policy overturned.”

“I think the Bundaberg Region was an exceptional case and its gratifying to see that the Newman Government has seen fit to moderate its stance on this issue.”

“The Bundaberg community can also take a bow,” said Cr. Forman. “I really think it was a case of people power swaying government opinion in the case for fluoridation.”

Cr. Alan Bush said he was extremely frustrated in recent days with the State Government indicating that if Council did not accept funding to undertake treatment of the water it may have seen that funding withdrawn and Council forced to proceed with the policy at its own cost.”

“The strong advocacy made by Council, the representations of Steve Bennett and the vocal opinions of the people of Bundaberg have all played a role in this decision,” said Cr. Bush.

“The great news is that ratepayers have been spared another cost and Council will save approximately $800,000 per year in operational costs.”
