Construction of Bargara’s new War Memorial has been delayed while Bundaberg Regional Council awaits the result of an application for financial assistance from the Federal Government to complete the works.
Bargara divisional representative Cr Greg Barnes said Council had hoped to have the new memorial completed in time for Anzac Day, April 25.
“Council is seeking financial assistance for the project through the Federal Government’s ‘ANZAC Centenary Local Grants’ scheme in an effort to reduce the impact on ratepayers,” Cr Barnes said.
“However, we are now aware that any such funding is unlikely to be available prior to the upcoming 2014 ANZAC Day Service.
“The proposed design of the new memorial is split into two phases. Most of the ground preparation works have been carried out and funded by Council, whilst the actual construction of the memorial itself is the subject of the application for Federal funding.”
Cr Barnes said delaying the completion of the works could save ratepayers thousands of dollars.
“By putting the memorial construction on hold, the project may also be eligible to additional State Government funding under the ‘Queensland ANZAC Centenary Grants Program’.
“In the meantime, Council will now install lawn on the section surrounding the site as per the design layout and will make the area accessible to the public until such time as the memorial is completed later in upcoming months,” he said.
Cr Barnes said this year’s ANZAC Day ceremony will follow the same format as in previous years, surrounding the Beaufort Bomber memorial.
“We understand that ANZAC Day is an important occasion for residents to remember the men and women who have served our nation and Council would like to thank residents for their patience in this matter.”
