Media Release – COUNCIL RAMPS UP COMMUNITY CONSULTATION

A number of newly-elected Councillors have led the initiative to spread the concept of weekly Community Consultation Desks across the region.

In recent weeks Crs Rowleson, Blackburn and Heuser have attended my Saturday morning Desk at Bargara Central to see how it operates and to gauge the level of feedback from local residents. With the strong support of the Mayor and some other Councillors, the concept will now be rolled out to include other shopping centres.

This is certainly a refreshing attitude which should address some of the consistently negative feedback contained in every Customer Satisfaction Survey conducted since the 2008 amalgamations and one that I fully endorse and welcome.

Media Release – COUNCIL RAMPS UP COMMUNITY CONSULTATION

Bundaberg Regional Council is showing its commitment to community engagement by trialing weekly community consultation forums at local shopping centres.

Spokesperson for Communications, Cr Helen Blackburn said the initiative would involve Councillors being on hand for several hours every Saturday at various shopping centres across the region to listen and talk to residents.

“Council will be introducing and practising a personal approach to community engagement and consultation. Every Saturday, there will be Councillors available at a dedicated area at Hinkler Central for people to talk to. Councillors will also be available at shopping centres such as Bundaberg North IGA, with Cr Greg Barnes regularly available at Bargara Central, where he has manned a consultation desk each Saturday for some years,” Cr Blackburn said.

“The residents of the Bundaberg Region are Council’s customers. We want to hear their views and we encourage them to meet with us.

“We want to show that we are committed to community consultation: consultation is essential in ensuring that we are providing services and programs in line with the needs and preferences of our community.

“Through this community consultation initiative that we have progressed, we are inviting residents to become involved in Council’s decision-making processes so that they can help shape the decisions that affect them.

“As well as listening to the concerns raised by residents, this initiative provides Councillors with the opportunity to ask for feedback on Council policies, service delivery performance and views on specific projects and developments.”

As part of the initiative, the Council community consultation desk will be operating at Hinkler Central in front of Mr Minit and CUA, up from the travelators, from 9am to midday every Saturday.
