Further development of commercial land on Bargara Road, East Bundaberg, to construct a service station, supporting shops and fast food outlets has been approved by the Bundaberg Regional Council.
At its planning meeting this week, Council considered an application to subdivide land at 93 Bargara Road to make way for a service station with eight petrol bowsers, a fuel shop, four additional small shops and four fast food outlets, including one with a drive through facility.
The development is to be serviced by 41 car parking spaces.
Planning Committee Chairman Cr Ross Sommerfeld said the development application had been approved in full – subject to a number of conditions – despite the land falling within a defined flood hazard area.
“This approval recognises the land has been flooded in the past but the developers will undertake earthworks to raise the floor level above the flood height as well as increasing the capacity of the drain on the site so there is no worsening of flooding on adjoining land,” Cr Sommerfeld said.
“This development is a great boost to the East Bundaberg area which was heavily affected in the 2013 flood.”
Cr Sommerfeld said the approval was the second granted by Council at the site with an initial application for storage sheds and commercial activity processed last year.
“This development further complements the provision of commercial and retail services available in this part of East Bundaberg and provides additional job opportunities for locals.”
“It is a real positive to see developers investing in Bundaberg and turning what might once have been considered a waste piece of land into something positive for local residents.”
