Bundaberg Regional Council has approved an application for a Material Change of Use for the Bargara Bowls and Sports Club.

Council Spokesperson for Planning and Development, Cr Ross Sommerfeld said the proposed development involves the retention, partial demolition and expansion of the existing club building.

“The proposed extension to the clubhouse will include two designated outdoor smoking areas; a gaming room; the relocation and expansion of amenities; a new reception and office area as well as the extension of the kitchen, new community meeting room, kids’ room and storage room,” Cr Sommerfeld said.

“The development will improve access to the site by modifying existing crossovers and introducing two new access points towards the northern boundary on Tanner Street. Road widening for the full site frontage of Whalley Street and Tanner Street as well as new kerb and channel and road widening for the Grimwood Street frontage has also been required by conditions of the approval.

“A total of 85 car parking spaces will be split over two locations. The applicant intends to reconfigure the layout of the 28 existing formal car parking spaces next to the clubhouse and provide an additional 23 spaces next to Whalley Street. In addition, a new car park will be created to accommodate 33 car parking spaces and one 12-seater bus parking bay.

“A new shade structure is also proposed over two existing bowling greens, which will replace existing rectractable shade cover.

“In response to concerns raised by local residents the Council has imposed a number of conditions to ensure that residents’ amenity is not adversely affected. Such conditions include limitations on lighting, noise and hours of operation.”
