Media Release – CONSTRUCTION OF MULTI-USE SPORTS AND COMMUNITY CENTRE BEGINS

The Bundaberg region’s Mayor and Councillors have joined State Member for Bundaberg Leanne Donaldson in a sod turning ceremony to mark the start of construction of the Multi-use Sports and Community Centre.

Work will begin on the multi-use centre following the Queensland Government’s decision late last year to grant $5 million towards the facility through the Building Our Regions fund.

Mayor Mal Forman said the $14.5 million centre, being developed on the site of the former Bundaberg Showgrounds, would play a vital role in the community.

“This is essential infrastructure and we thank the Queensland Government for its support. As well as enabling the PCYC to offer a broad range of sports activities, youth programs, school age care and fitness options, the centre will host various community events and be used as a major evacuation centre during natural disasters,” Cr Forman said.

“As well as incorporating community meeting rooms, kitchen and canteen facilities, the centre will include a three court sports precinct, gymnastics hall and areas for exercise and group fitness. These facilities will help to increase physical activity, improve health outcomes and promote community participation in regional events.”

“The successful tenderer for construction is Oasis Construction and local contractors are being sourced for a range of requirements including but not limited to civil works; concrete supply and labour; reinforcement supply; metal work; roofing works; joinery; painting; plumbing; and electrical works.”

Local engagement has already begun, with Livingstone Low Electrical being granted a contract worth more than $1.5 million to carry out electrical work and local suppliers Coates Hire and Handy Hire engaged to supply site component sheds and perimeter security fencing. Work continues to lock in other local suppliers.

The Bundaberg Region Multi-use Sports and Community Centre is scheduled for completion by the end of October, 2016.

The Bundaberg Region Multi-use Sports and Community Centre is proudly sponsored by the Queensland Government in association with the Bundaberg Regional Council.
