Bundaberg Regional Council’s Local Disaster Management Group has issued a general warning to residents in low lying coastal areas to remain vigilant regarding the possible effects of storm surges created in the wake of ex-tropical cyclone Oswald.
Cr. Mal Forman, Council’s Disaster Management portfolio spokesperson, said the Bureau of Meteorology had identified that storm surges were possible on Saturday and Sunday.
“With the current high tide situations the Local Disaster Management Group has consulted with BOM and a Government coastal engineer regarding the possible effects of storm surges.”
While the LDMG remains cautiously optimistic that residents in low lying coastal areas will avoid any inundation, it has advised that residents should take appropriate action to ensure their personal safety. Possessions should also be stored on higher ground.
Residents in coastal communities are requested to maintain a close watch on conditions and to listen to local radio stations or visit Council’s website at www.bundaberg.qld.gov.au or the BOM website at www.bom.gov.au for current information.
