Media Release – CHINESE TRADE OPPORTUNITIES EXPLORED

Continued exposure to delegations and forums that focussed on expanded trade links with China are elements underpinning Bundaberg Regional Council’s efforts to open up overseas trade opportunities for regional business.

Council’s Economic Development portfolio spokesperson Cr. Greg Barnes said exploring overseas opportunities is a key part of Council’s Trade and Investment Strategy.

He said the recent Asian Century Trade Forum held at the Brothers Club had been a valuable engagement opportunity that had resulted in several regional businesses expressing interest in participating in a trade delegation to be organised in Nanning later this year or early in 2014..

Cr. Barnes said Council’s Economic Business Development Unit was the conduit by which the introductions would be made.

“It needs to be clearly understood that while we are simply a facilitating agency, Council remains committed to exploring every opportunity to promote economic development. It is up to individual businesses in partnership with entities such as Austrade and Trade and Investment Queensland to further the relationships and discuss specific aspects of any trade negotiations.”

Cr. Barnes said that owing to Council’s excellent relationship with Nanning, through its sister city agreement of 15 years, the path to introductions and negotiations with Chinese trade officials and businesses was substantially easier.

“We want to use the great linkages we enjoy with Nanning to assist many of our local export ready regional businesses to explore trade opportunities with China.”

“To assist in this trade development initiative Council has issued an invitation to a key Government official, Mr. Zhoufei Yang, Deputy Director of Nanning Investment Promotion Bureau to visit Bundaberg next month to meet with Bundaberg’s export ready businesses.”

Cr. Barnes said the initiative was an exciting one and provided the potential for meaningful port to port trade between the Bundaberg Region and Nanning.

“We now encourage all business owners throughout our region who would like to meet with Mr. Yang or who have an interest in being part of the trade delegation to Nanning City to contact our Manager, Economic Development Mr Cameron Bisley on 4130 4003 or via email at cameron.bisley@bundaberg.qld.gov.au”
