GROWING THE REGION’S ECONOMY
Bundaberg Regional Council remains committed to growing the region’s economy through the allocation of some $11.65M in the 2012/13 Budget for economic development initiatives & operations and a further $11.85M for major strategic projects including the construction of the Bundaberg Recreation Precinct and Athletics Super Park facility.
Economic Development portfolio spokesperson, Cr Greg Barnes said that the Council will continue to support regional businesses and industries through the implementation of strategies designed to strengthen the economy and promote the creation of jobs throughout the region.
“Apart from supporting existing businesses, we are also focusing on attracting a variety of other businesses to either establish or relocate their operations within our region”, Cr. Barnes said.
The Office of Economic Development has been successful in attracting funding and grants which have assisted major projects and developments including significant infrastructure for the Bundaberg Regional Airport.
A significant parcel of commercial land in the airport’s Aviation Precinct will soon be available and Council will seek expressions of interest from businesses requiring accommodation including options for direct airside (runway) access.
“Securing additional air services to and from Bundaberg, enticing new businesses to the region and providing employment and lifestyle opportunities for a diverse workforce, remain amongst our priorities”, Cr. Barnes said.
Council is also developing Digital Economy Strategies to ensure that local businesses and industries are ready for the opportunities that will be available through Bundaberg’s connection to the National Broadband Network within the next three years.
As one of the State Government’s ‘Four Pillars of the Economy’, Council will also continue to support the local Tourism Industry including the enticement of local attractions and services for the domestic and international traveler. A recently commissioned report will review the delivery of tourism services to ensure that the most efficient use of ratepayer’s funds and resources are implemented.
