MAYOR URGES CALM AS RAINFALL SET TO CONTINUE

Residents across the Bundaberg Region have been advised to remain alert but not to be alarmed with Bundaberg not expected to reach minor flood levels despite recent heavy rainfall in the area.

Mayor, Cr. Mal Forman said a meeting of the Local Disaster Management Group executive this morning had determined that there was no immediate threat of flooding to the Bundaberg Region.

“However, with more rain expected in coming days, I do advise people who live in low lying areas to take appropriate action to ensure their own safety. This may require making preparations now.”

The Mayor said there was a need for people to be vigilant but to remain calm. He said significant rainfall had been recorded in locations within the Burnett catchment and these are being closely monitored.

The Kolan River and Baffle Creek will likely experience minor to moderate flood levels.  Residents of these areas should maintain a high level of vigilance.

“The rain will likely continue in the Bundaberg Region over the next few days, most likely falling as periods of heavy downpours. This could cause local streams and creeks near the coast to experience flash flooding,” he said.

Cr. Forman said residents should stay tuned to local radio stations for weather updates or view Council’s website at www.bundaberg.qld.gov.au or the BOM website.

“At this stage we will continue to monitor the weather pattern but we are advising people to fully consider their own circumstances,” he said.
