IS YOUR DOG KILLING OUR TURTLES?

Council has received complaints regarding irresponsible dog owners who are letting their pets run free at night in the vicinity of Archie’s Beach (south Kelly’s) and as a result are digging up turtle nests and destroying eggs.

Council has arranged for traps to be set which has already resulted in two dogs being impounded proving to be an extremely costly exercise for their owners.

I have requested that Council’s animal control officers increase their surveilance of this area and have also asked that they confer with the relevant State agencies to see if the provisions of the Nature Conservation Act can be applied to offending owners as well. To this extent, I have also discussed the issue with Steve Bennett’s office and even though we’re now at the tail end of the turtle season, it is important that the relevant agencies work together to protect this vital and natural resource.

I’d also like to thank those local residents who have stepped forward and volunteered to monitor the area and report any inappropriate late night and early morning activity.
