I’ve received some inquiries regarding the scheduled timing of Council’s free ‘Be Active, Be Alive Program’ which I’ve forwarded to Council staff for comment. I’ve now received a response which is pasted below:-
Why is there no or very few BABA classes scheduled for working people?
Council’s Be Active, Be Alive Program has been scheduled in accordance with availability of Fitness Providers and the venues in which the activities are provided (being parks and pools) across the region. The intent of the Program is to offer people located across our region an opportunity to try out different activities, provided at a range of times and in different locations. The program does not intend to compete with commercial operators who may already be running classes at times that suit different demographic groups (including the working public). As the program is run in the outdoors, this limits the hours that the program can be safely scheduled as a majority of parks do not have capacity of floodlight lighting suitable for the conduct of physical activities during dim light (this issue precludes sessions being offered any later than 5.30pm). There are nevertheless a number of programs offered at 5.30pm to suit those who prefer this time slot (offered in a total of 3 localities across our region). This time slot was retained in the Programs scheduling due to previous strong attendance levels in past programs and if the strong participation levels for this session time continues throughout this program, staff will be keen to retain such scheduling (subject to Fitness Provider availability) for future programs.
Last year, a session was available at a Bundaberg pool at 5.30pm, why has this not been repeated, these were well attended?
Council’s Be Active, Be Alive Program has been scheduled in accordance with both respect for previous participation levels and Fitness Provider and Pool Provider availability. Classes have also been scheduled to minimise conflict across activities as much as possible and particularly so for the City of Bundaberg area, so that members are able to choose to participate in both pool and park based programs across the schedule without having to miss out on either one if the time suits them. Unfortunately, due to constraints in Providers availabilities – which is something that can vary from year to year, there is no guarantee that a time slot that was available last year will be offered in any subsequent year. Council have tried to repeat the schedule of popular activities and times (from last years program) where the availability of providers have made this possible.
