**Important Media Release** – LOCAL DISASTER GROUP KEEPS A KEEN WEATHER EYE

With the summer storm season now upon us, Bundaberg Regional Council is maintaining a close eye on the weather through the activities of its Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG).

Bundaberg Regional Council Acting Mayor Dave Batt said the LDMG was comprised of representatives of the various emergency organisations across the region and continued to meet regularly.

“There is no doubt the LDMG has gained a wealth of knowledge and practical experience in dealing with emergency situations in the region because of the flood events of 2010/11 and 2013.

“This experience is invaluable for the team members and ensures that the high level of expertise they can bring to the table is reflected in the manner in which the LDMG caters to the current and future emergency needs of the region.”

Cr Batt said a meeting of the LDMG this week had been told that a significant rain event was expected within the region leading into the weekend.

“Information from BOM is that the expected rainfall event is anticipated to be located in the south east corner of the state.

“However, there is a BOM warning that the possibility of falls of between 50mm and 100mm may impact the Bundaberg region tomorrow.

“The LDMG continues to monitor forecasts and data and this is assisted greatly through the installation of new and upgraded rain and river gauges,” Cr Batt said.

“As a group I feel we are far better placed to deliver accurate and timely messaging to our community in the event of any perceived emergency situation.

“Residents also need to play their part by regularly listening to news updates when there are weather warnings and being prepared through the approved “Get Ready” initiatives.

Information regarding the Get Ready program is available at www.bundaberg.qld.gov.au under the Residents & Community tab and look for “Disaster Management”.
