The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued a warning this morning for heavy rain for locations between Gladstone and the Gold Coast, for the next 24 hours. Widespread 24-hour rainfall totals of 50mm to 100 mm are likely across these areas. Rainfall totals greater than 100mm at some locations are also likely. Strong winds of 60-70km/h are expected. The rain is expected to continue through Tuesday in the Bundaberg Region, with further falls likely on Wednesday.
Bundaberg Regional Council with the Local Disaster Management Group and BOM are closely monitoring this system. The Local Disaster Management Group is at ‘Lean Forward’ status.
Residents are advised to be vigilant but to remain calm, listening out for weather updates on local radio. Bundaberg Regional Council will also provide regular updates via the website and Facebook page. The Bureau of Meteorology webpage (www.bom.qld.gov.au/qld) provides latest rainfall totals, river conditions and warnings – Bundaberg Regional Council encourages residents to monitor these information sources.
The rain will likely continue in the Bundaberg Region over the next few days, most likely falling as periods of heavy downpours. This could cause local streams and creeks near the coast to experience flash flooding.
The Kolan River and Baffle Creek may experience rapid river rises in the event of rainfall totals greater than 100mm. Minor to moderate flood levels are possible. Residents of these areas should maintain a high level of vigilance.
People are advised that they should:
- Drive to weather conditions
- Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters; and
- Keep clear of creeks and storm drains
- For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
