Queensland Governor, Penelope Wensley visited Bundaberg today and inspected flood affected parts of the city.
Ms. Wensley attended a briefing session with Council and was hosted to a morning tea with the Mayor, Cr. Mal Forman and Bundaberg Regional Councillors.
During her inspection of Bundaberg’s hardest hit flood areas, the Governor visited North Bundaberg where she met with representatives of Bundaberg Hockey Association before travelling to the Botanic Gardens to inspect damage and speak with staff.
Ms. Wensley told media at the Botanic Gardens that her visit was a means of assuring people that they had not been forgotten.
She said that as part of her role she would be advising Queensland and the rest of Australia when Bundaberg’s attractions such as the Hinkler Hall of Aviation were up and running.
“The same applies to Mon Repos and the turtles. I will be talking about these attractions. I would like to know when the Hinkler Hall of Aviation is again open to the public so I can advise communities throughout Australia about that,” she said.
The Governor praised the work of staff member Colleen Foglia and her small team in endeavouring to get the Hinkler Hall of Aviation back to public accessibility.
Ms. Foglia, who received a small gift from the Governor, said it was expected to be a number of months before the Hall of Aviation is open to the general public.
The Governor also met with Bundaberg Fruit & Vegetable Growers Association members and inspected Hinkler Central which is undergoing significant work since being flooded.
Tonight the Governor and her party will be hosted to dinner by the Mayor and Mrs. Forman.
