Queensland Fire & Rescue Service personnel and Rural Brigade members from throughout the state provided an essential service during the flood cleanup and Bundaberg is being asked to farewell them in style when they exit the community on Friday morning.
The firies performed hundreds of “hose outs” of mud caked flood damaged homes and business premises in the weeks since the disaster unfolded.
Many of the firies were volunteers and were not paid for putting in long hours for the benefit of the community.
Mayor, Cr. Mal Forman said the crews associated with the dozens of appliances that assisted in Bundaberg were deserving of a heroes sendoff.
“These men and women were magnificent and made the cleanup task so much easier for those people devastated by the floods.”
“It would be great if we could get a community turnout to see them off in style,” he said.
Around a dozen appliances and their crews, representing the last of the volunteer personnel located in Bundaberg, is expected to be addressed by Member for Bundaberg and Minister for Police and Community Safety, Jack Dempsey prior to leaving Salter Oval on Friday.
The fire trucks will enter Bundaberg along Takalvan Street, turn into Quay Street prior to making their way to Bourbong Street for a parade past the Council Chambers.
The Mayor will lead the farewell in company with Mr. Dempsey and QFRS representatives. The cavalcade is expected at the Council Chambers between 10am and 10.15am.
