Local Government Minister David Crisafulli returned to Bundaberg this morning to join the mayor in officially opening the new Riverside Parkland precinct on the former site of the Midtown Marina.
The marina was destroyed beyond repair by the 2013 floods which reached peaked at 9.53m.
The 2013 flood devastated the marina on the banks of the Burnett River creating a huge sinkhole and making it unfeasible to rebuild the business in that location.
Earlier this year the Council decided to purchase the land and return it to riverfront parkland for community use.
Championed by the Minister & local members Jack Dempsey & Steve Bennett, the State Government provided significant funding towards the project which involved driving sheet pylons into the river bed before reclaiming the land behind. Once stabilised, the actual parkland work commenced and the result has been fantastic.
The project which received unanimous support from Councillors has now replaced the scar of the floods with an attractive section of open riverside parkland.
