Effective tomorrow (1st July) and in compliance with the requirements of the Office of Transport Security (OTS), all passengers departing from Bundaberg Airport and their baggage will now undergo security screening including random explosive trace element testing.
Last year Council was proactive in sourcing the best and most up-to-date equipment available to provide these services with the capital cost being borne by the Federal Government. Operating and maintenance costs will be recovered through arrangements with the current and future air service provider(s).
In December last year Council advertised for an aviation security screening contractor to conduct the security operations and we congratulate MSS Ltd who were the successful tenderer. Their staff have been trained to meet all OTS operational standards.
The commencement of security screening and the introduction of a sterile security border around the Departure Lounge has resulted in a number of operational changes at the airport.
- Departing passengers should ensure that they are at the airport at least an hour before the scheduled departure time for their flight.
- Family and friends of departing passengers will be able to enter the secure section of the departure lounge, however they will have to undergo the same screening process as all passengers.
- A hot beverage dispensing machine (operated by the airport kiosk) has been installed in the departure lounge and male/female/disabled toilets are also available within the secure area.
- It is highly recommended that anyone entering the the departure lounge make any other purchases from the kiosk before doing so as any person leaving the secure area for any reason will have to undergo a repeated security scan on their return.
- Alternatively, passengers and their family/friends are welcome to wait for their flight within the main (non-secure) section of the terminal until the imminent boarding of their flight.
As the portfolio spokesperson for airport operations, I’m keen to receive any feedback (positive or negative) so that we can monitor the introduction of these security services and provide the best and most efficient experience for travellers and their families & friends.
