BEACH MILIEU ROADSIDE DRAINAGE ISSUES

On Friday I carried out another inspection of the roadside drains throughout Beach Milieu off Davidson Street following on-going concerns by residents regarding ponding and stagnant water. I was joined by Cr. Tony Ricciardi (Roads & Drainage Portfolio) & a Senior Engineer who had not previously been engaged on the project.

I was previously advised that the cost to recitify the problem (due to a lack of topographical gradient – ie dead flat land) could cost around $1M to fix however after considering a number of issues and noting the slightly reduced level of the lake following the insertion of the Davidson Street culverts, we came up with a couple of possible much cheaper solutions. These will require more investigation and design modelling, but from a lay-person’s point of view, I beleive that they’re feasible. If so, I’ll be lobbying Council to conduct a trial as soon as possible.

The purpose of this post is not to raise any hopes amongst those being affected within the Beach Milieu area but to reassure them that Council is actively working on a realistic and cost-effective solution and that there may be some light at the end of the tunnel.

I’ll also continue to lobby Council to acquire a multi-purpose weed-harvesting machine such as a Truxor so the we can implement a maintenance program to keep enclosed waterways such as the Beach Milieu Lake, Bargara Lake, Money’s Creek Lagoon, Bargara Breeze Lagoon, Moore Park Beach Lagoon and others across the region in a pristine condition rather than the unattractive and environmentally unfriendly catchments that we’re currently putting up with.

I’ll post any updates as they come to hand.
