As was always going to be the case, during the busy period following the tornado/flooding events, I’ve forgotten to thank someone who provided help when it was most needed.
When their black, steel-hulled schooner got washed down the Burnett River during the floods and went aground in front of Bargara’s Turtle Playground, Trish & Gorge Grommeck lost more than their boat – they lost their home.
When I met them the next day it was apparent that they had a long haul ahead as they went through the process of retrieving salvagable belongings, preparing for the insurance assessment and mapping out their future.
I contacted Kacy’s and asked if they could provide some complimentary accommodation until they could settle down and sort things out and because of the immediate proximity of the motel to the vessel.
Without heistation, the Daly family (owners of Kacy’s) obliged and put Trish & Gorge up in one of their motel units until alternative arrangements could be made.
This is yet another example of local residents and businesses coming together during a time of unbelievable crisis and not only helping out each other, but also total strangers.
